The objectives of this course are:
To understand that critical theory will help us to recognise and analyse the power structures at work in the construction of gender, identity, nationalism and processes of symbolic interpretation.
To understand that language is central to the construction and deconstruction of meaning.
To provide critical tools for analysing popular and media culture (from feminism and gender studies, psychoanalytic theory, postcolonial criticism and philosophy).
To emphasize the links between text and context.

Descripció |
Activitats Introductòries |
The introduction to this course will be based on feedback from the students to determine how widely you have read in the area of cultural theories. There will also be an introduction to the texts in the dossier, the grading system, and seminar presentations. This will be followed by readings from texts |
Sessió Magistral |
Each of the main topics will be introduced in lecture form. You will then be asked to read and prepare the required reading texts in the dossier. |
Seminaris |
Seminar sessions will be based on readings and class debates. The material to be discussed might be written or visual. |
Presentacions / exposicions |
Each student will be asked to prepare a seminar during the course. You may choose your own topic, so long as it is consistent with the theories we cover. You will be encouraged to be adventurous in your teaching of the seminar by introducing new material, motivating your classmates to ask questions and engage in discussion. |

Presentacions / exposicions |
You will be asked to prepare a class seminar based on the readings done previously and incorporating a new article. The subject should be one you will be working on for your Masters project. Please prepare a handout for your class mates, with questions you would like to raise for discussion and any other information you think will be important. Remember that you will have to initiate the discussion and motivate the others to join in. You will also have to "teach" them new material so make your seminar as interesting as possible by using power point, visual and textual materials. |
