General description and relevant information This module will explore Irish literary writing’s deployment of gender representation and its engagement with gender politics, focusing on the past fifty years and attending to the genres of the novel, drama and poetry.

Objectives Competences
To provide students with theoretical information and critical tools to be able to understand the main characteristics and developments in contemporary Irish literature written by women. The aim of the course is to generate the critical awareness that will allow students to evaluate the larger achievements and potential of Irish literary writing in its alertness to gender’s pivotal role in Irish life. Gender representation in Irish writing.
Critical awareness of the historical background to gender representation in Irish writing, focusing on the representation of woman as nation. Patriarchy, religion and society.
Strategies and techniques in the representation of gender in Irish writing by or on women. Formal strategies of Irish writers in terms of their use or representation of gender.
Questions of identity: gender and nation Irish patriarchy; storytelling as healing.
Coming-of-age and transgressive sexuality.
Contemporary developments in Irish society and culture. The artist and the gendered nation.
Gender of the Celtic Tiger.
Nationalism, aesthetics, and modernity
Contemprary Irish drama and the role of women. Experiemntal trends in contemporary Irish drama. A new scenario: transgressive gender representations.

Methodologies
  Description
Activitats Introductòries The introductory sessions will be based on an explanation of the syllabus, the texts in the dossier, the grading system, and seminar presentations.
Sessió Magistral The main topics contained in the course syllabus will be introduced in lecture form. Following that, students will be asked to read on related texts in the dossier.
Treballs Students willbe asked to produce 3 short essays/assignments based on topics related to the topics studied in class (seminar sessions)
Seminaris Seminar sessions will be based on readings and analysis of literary or theoretical texts.

Students will be encouraged to engage in these sessions, as they will be an important part of part of their course assessment.
Presentacions / exposicions Each student will be asked to do a research on a topic of their choice, related to any of the topics studied in the course.

At the end of this process, each student will do a class presentation in which they will expose their work in seminar form.

The choice of topic, the research and the presentation will be discussed with the teacher in tutorial sessions.

Description
Students will always be welcome to use the teacher's visiting hours, which will be duly notified at the beginnig of the course. Students' individual research and work for presentations will be discussed with the teacher ed in tutorials.

Others

Regular attendance in class and active involvement in discussion will be an essential requirement. Students will be expected to have read set texts (both literary and theoretical) in advance of seminar sessions.
