1.1 Evolució del concepte de literatura i definició de literarietat: oralitat/escriptura; ocasió/gènere; performance/lectura.
1.2 La interpretació del text: corrents teòrics i metodologies crítiques per a l'estudi de la literatura.
2.1 Gènere dramàtic: mimesi, mite i catarsi. L'heroi tràgic: Èdip i Hamlet, antic vs. modern. (Lectures obligatòries: Èdip Rei de Sòfocles, Hamlet de Shakespeare).
2.2 La lírica i l'amor: definició d'allò líric. (Antologia de textos).
2.3 La narrativa i les seves transformacions: idealisme i paròdia. (Antologia de narracions breus).
3.1 El subjecte modern: del jo romàntic a Baudelaire.
3.2 La crisi de la realitat. (Lectures obligatòries: Un cor simple (Tres contes) de Flaubert; Bartleby, l'escrivent de Melville; La metamorfosi de Kafka).
3.3 La crisi del llenguatge. (Lectures obligatòries: Orlando de V. Woolf).

| Romanticism. |
The first module will focus on analysing literary works in historical and sociocultural context. We will have a look at Romanticism. Romanticism challenged the Enlightenment ideals of reason, order and balance and privileged the imagination, freedom of spirit and subjective experience. Main authors:
William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, William Blake,
Mary Shelley, "Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus".

| Literary Utopia and Dystopia. |
The second module will centre on one literary genre and its development. We will learn about literary utopia and dystopia. Main texts: Sir Thomas More "Utopia", Jonathan Swift "Gulliver’s Travels", George Orwell "Nineteen Eighty-Four", Margaret Atwood "The Handmaid’s Tale". |
Dystopian Writing for Young Adults.

The aim of the third module will be learning how to analyse literary works written for a specific audience. We will deal with literature for children and young adults. The main text: Lois Lowry "The Giver". |

The first class will introduce this module of literature, its contents, reading texts, methodology, exams and bibliography. It is important that all students attend regularly. |
| Seminaris |
The seminars will focus on the different contents related to the literature of the 19th century as well as literary utopia and dystopia. There will be general introductions to the literary and cultural contexts, which will be done with power-point presentations. The seminars will also be practical and based on the reading of texts uploaded to Moodle.

Part of this course will be based on lectures, especially the Theory classes. You will be introduced to different literary theories and also social and ideological theories which will help you to understand better the significance of the texts discussed in class. |

OBSERVACIÓ GLOBAL: La nota final de l'assignatura resultarà de la mitjana dels dos quadrimestres sempre que s'hagin aprovat tots dos. En la SEGONA CONVOCATÒRIA es farà un examen escrit i hi entrarà la matèria treballada durant el curs. Cada quadrimestre s'avaluarà de manera independent i per aprovar l'assignatura caldrà tenir-los aprovats tots dos. PRIMER QUADRIMESTRE: Per poder aprovar el primer quadrimestre, caldrà obtenir un mínim de cinc en la prova de desenvolupament i en el comentari de text presencial.
SEGON QUADRIMESTRE:- In order to pass the subject, you need to take all the tests as well as prepare and present the project. Failure to do so will result in you failing the whole subject and having to take the resit exam.
- If you pass all the course (with a minimum overall grade of 5) and attend classes regularly, you will not have to take the resit exam (segona convocatòria).
- Please note, however, that if your grade is lower than 4 on any of the parts of the subject (any of the tests or the project), you will have to take the resit exam in June.
For students who do not attend classes regularly: you will be asked to do the RESIT EXAM or SEGONA CONVOCATÒRIA. |
