SECOND TERM
Romanticism. The first module will focus on analysing literary works in historical and sociocultural context. We will have a look at Romanticism. Romanticism challenged the Enlightenment ideals of reason, order and balance and privileged the imagination, freedom of spirit and subjective experience. Main authors:
William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, William Blake, Mary Shelley.
Literary Utopia and Dystopia. The second module will centre on one literary genre and its development. We will learn about literary utopia and dystopia. Main texts: George Orwell "Nineteen Eighty-Four", Margaret Atwood "The Handmaid’s Tale". We will also focus on Young Adult Dystopia

Methodologies
  Description
Introductory activities The first class will introduce this subject, its contents, reading texts, methodology, exams and bibliography. It is important that all students attend regularly.
Seminars The seminars will focus on the different contents related to the literature of the 19th century as well as literary utopia and dystopia. There will be general introductions to the literary and cultural contexts, which will be done with power-point presentations. The seminars will also be practical and based on the reading of texts uploaded to Moodle.

Lecture Part of this course will be based on lectures, especially the Theory classes. You will be introduced to different literary theories and also social and ideological theories which will help you to understand better the significance of the texts discussed in class.

PRIMER QUADRIMESTRE:
Dues proves telemàtiques d'avaluació contínua via moodle sobre les nocions teòriques bàsiques estudiades durant el curs i les lectures obligatòries. Cada examen es puntuarà sobre 40%. Per aprovar l'assignatura cal obtenir un mínim del 50% entre els dos examens. Aquells alumnes que els assoleixin amb un 70% podran accedir a la prova escrita de desenvolupament per millorar la nota i premiar, si s'escau, l'excel·lència.

SECOND TERM
TWO TESTS:
The tests will assess how much you have understood and learned from the topics discussed and analysed in class. The assessment will also be based on your language skills. (74%)

OBSERVACIÓ GLOBAL: La nota final de l'assignatura resultarà de la mitjana dels dos quadrimestres sempre que s'hagin aprovat tots dos.

En la SEGONA CONVOCATÒRIA es farà un examen escrit i hi entrarà la matèria treballada durant el curs. Cada quadrimestre s'avaluarà de manera independent i per aprovar l'assignatura caldrà tenir-los aprovats tots dos amb nota mínima d'un 5 a cada part.

PRIMER QUADRIMESTRE: Per poder aprovar el primer quadrimestre, caldrà obtenir un mínim de cinc en la prova de desenvolupament i en el comentari de text presencial.

SEGON QUADRIMESTRE / SECOND TERM:

  • In order to pass the second term, you need to take all the tests as well as prepare and present the project. Failure to do so will result in you failing the whole second term and having to take the resit exam.
  • If your overall grade for the second term is below 5 and if you do not attend classes regularly, you will have to take the resit exam (segona convocatòria).

For students who do not attend classes regularly: you will be asked to do the RESIT EXAM or SEGONA CONVOCATÒRIA.
