General description and relevant information Overview and understanding of the diversity of processes and products that can be made with biotechnology, from the different pharmaceutical, food, environmental and other fields.

Competences
Type A Code Competences Specific
A7 Be able to search, obtain, analyse and interpret information from the main biological databases: genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomics, taxonomic and other, as well as bibliographic data, and use basic bioinformatics tools.
A9 Know in depth the microorganisms, both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, viruses, as well as the diversity of metabolisms present in prokaryotes, and their possibilities of biotechnological use.
A15 Know the diversity of existing biotechnological processes and products, as well as the recent biotechnological advances, and know how to explain them and communicate them to diverse audiences.
Type B Code Competences Transversal
B5 Teamwork, collaboration and sharing of responsibility
B6 Clear and effective communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in public or a specific technical field
Type C Code Competences Nuclear
C3 Be able to manage information and knowledge

Learning outcomes
Type A Code Learning outcomes
A7 Know which are the biocatalysts (microorganisms, enzymes or other biological systems) responsible for the different biotechnological processes, their main characteristics, and the metabolisms involved.
Understand the fundamentals and design criteria of biotechnology products.
A9 Know which are the biocatalysts (microorganisms, enzymes or other biological systems) responsible for the different biotechnological processes, their main characteristics, and the metabolisms involved.
A15 Understand the processes and products of Biotechnology in the various economic sectors and synthesize the bibliographic knowledge about a specific biotechnology process.
Type B Code Learning outcomes
B5 Help to draw up and apply the team’s work processes.
Ensure that the way they communicate and relate to others contributes to the cohesion of the group.
Take an interest in the importance of the group’s activity.
B6 Plan their communications: generate ideas, search for information, select and order the information, make schemes, determine the type of audience and the objectives of the communication, etc.
Make interesting and persuasive presentations.
Analyze, appraise and respond to the questions they are asked during an oral presentation.
Type C Code Learning outcomes
C3 Locate and access information effectively and efficiently.
Critically evaluate information and its sources, and add it to their own knowledge base and system of values.
Have a full understanding of the economic, legal, social and ethical implications of accessing and using information.

Methodologies
Methodologies
  Description
Introductory activities Discuss how the development of the subject will be, the methodologies, the contents, the evaluation system and the sources of information.
Lecture Explain the subtopics of the introduction.
Assignments The students, in groups of 2-3, will prepare about 2 bibliographic revision works (like a review, maximum 5 pages) about products or processes in different fields (pharmaceutical, food, environmental, others).
Presentations / oral communications In groups of 2-3, students will make exhibitions (a total of 2) on biotechnological products or processes that they have previously prepared the bibliographic review works.
Personal attention Help and advise the students in their doubts in the bibliographic searches, in the accomplishment of the bibliographic works.

Personalized attention
Description
Help and advise students in their doubts about bibliographic searches, in the accomplishment of Bibliographic Works.

Assessment

Assignments
A7

B5
C3
Bibliographical works written in groups, in the shape of a review on different processes, maximum 8 pages, abstract in English. 32%
Presentations / oral communications
A15
B6
Presentation of bibliographic works done in groups (powerpoint). Self-assessment among all considering clarity, interest, difficulty of the subject, exhibition form and discussion. 32%
Others

Written exam of the contents presented in the work carried out by the students.

Other comments and second exam session

During the evaluation tests, mobile phones, tablets and other devices that are not expressly authorized for the test, must be turned off and out of sight.

The demonstration of fraudulent conduct of some evaluative activity of some subject in both material and virtual and electronic support leads to the student the suspension note of this evaluation activity. Regardless of this, in view of the seriousness of the facts, the center may propose the initiation of a disciplinary file, which will be initiated by resolution of the rector.

For the 2nd call, it can be kept the mark of the works and the exhibitions (if are passed), and only must repeat the written test.
