Introduction: characteristics of polymeric materials
Definition of polymer and macromolecule, synthesis and structure of polymers, polymer nomenclature
Types of polymers: thermoplastics, thermosetting, elastomers; fibers
Correlations property-structure
Morphology; definition of molecular weights and their distributions, the glass transition; crystallization; viscoelasticity; introduction to mechanical properties.
Techniques for characterization of polymers: spectroscopy, molecular weight determination techniques, microscopic techniques, thermal analysis Differential scanning calorimetry, size exclusion chromatography and other techniques to determine the molecular weight and its distribution, thermogravimetric analysis and dynamo-mechanic thermal analysis
Applications in composite materials: nanocomposites and microcomposites
Applications to advanced polymeric materials: flame retardant polymers, liquid crystalline polymers and ordered thermosets
