Students taking this course will be exposed to a variety of texts written in English. The discussion of poetry and drama will progressively introduce basic literary concepts such as the narrator/narrative voice, character, setting, plot, theme, irony and so forth. Students must expect to participate actively in class providing interpretations and opinions which may enrich the discussion of the texts. Theoretical input will be based on the second half of the textbook "Ways of Reading" (see bibliography), which students should buy; practical commentaries will be based on the photocopied course anthology, and a short novel, the title of which will be decided during the first term of the academic year.
