General description and relevant information |
This course surveys audiovisual media since the origins of the phonograph and cinema and until the Youtube ages (going through radio, television and so). The evolution of these media and, mainly, their content, will be analysed as intertwinned, since radio forms influenced those of television, and so did serial films. We will start by observing how a bunch of inventors with different goals (scientific, commercial, filantropy...) and from different geographies developed photography into life motion (cinema) and radio into images (television). We will focus on how these major technological developments entail new kinds and formats for content which is commonly based on popular entertainment forms. The course aims to provide tools for a critical reflection on audiovisual major forms, to which students can look in order to craft their own projects. |
