General description and relevant information The 4th Course of Architecture Design and Urbanism Works on one of the key and most important industries of the country: the tourism. This course aims to study the tourism phenomena and its condition of economic activity able to radically transform the city and the territory. In recent years it has observed how tourism has been able to modify the landscape in the Catalan and Spanish coast but also cities and the public space and consequently the life of its neighbors. Tourism is no longer a marginal phenomenon, aliened to the most of the people, mere observers when the impact was restricted to some specific coastal and urban locations. The today’s tourism has enough transformation capacity to necessarily affect any people and their live conditions. This course wants to work on landscapes and urban structures of different types to make emerge indicators that contribute to visualize new management policies, at the same time that contribute to develop new strategic urban and landscape plans able to provide appropriate solutions to contemporary demands. The course is developed through practical exercises that join research and proposals, on extreme locations of different urban condition. Working under extreme conditions eases the emergence of territorial, social and economic problems at the same time that facilitates the visualization of the best solutions. The curs will develops both on an urban context, under touristic pressure, and an expectant territory, unspoiled and fragile needed of smart touristic projects for it renovation, activation and preservation. Consolidates urban areas where the tourism have recently appear will be studied as well as other locations where tourism has seen the catalyzer of a new economy and urban activity. Likewise, territories hardly modified by a destructive tourism will be studied together with worrying freezing landscapes, derelict result of the recent economic crisis. To investigate the new scenarios, the course proposal changes the students’ position from observers to active participants with the aim of discovering new touristic projects build on social, cultural and sustainable architecture bases. The course suggest to become not only a passive tourist, but also a local citizen, which suffers the strange and persistent visitor. Exchange the position from visitor to local and from local to visitant, will ease the creation of new scenarios taking into consideration intensive tourism at the same time that will make possible the emergence of hidden values not yet revealed or developed.
